The level 4 exhibition opened on Friday 28 of April and ran for the next two days. The show was held at Wharf Chambers on the middle floor and featured a piece of work by each of the students on level 4. We had a week to put the show together during which each of us had specific jobs to do. I was part of the curation team.
As a curator out first job of the week was to help the logistics team make the space ready for the work to be placed. This involved gum taping the walls and then filling, sanding and painting them. Once the space was prepared we then set about arranging the works, focusing mainly on larger pieces first. Each piece of work was moved around several times before being hung to ensure it worked effectively with its surroundings. There where two rooms in which work had to be hung so one of the major decisions to make was which pieces of work would go in which room.
My work at the show.
I really enjoyed the challenge of curation. Contemplating pieces of work and the space and making decisions regarding them was really engaging and exciting. I found curation was quite creative job and I had to be quite imaginative to come up with effective solutions to issues we had during the process. I found looking at the finished exhibition really gave me a sense of accomplishment knowing I had been involved in making the show look the way it did.
I think overall the exhibition was very successful. I thought the standard of work was very high and we had managed to curate it in a way that made the pieces work together well. The opening night was very good and the exhibition space was packed with visitors which was a fantastic experience. The biggest issue the show faced was space as the rooms where fairly small for a show of 70 pieces of work. Despite this I think we did well to avoid the show looking to crowded.
My work at the show was made up of three drawings and audio. I think it worked well in the space it was allocated and had a good relationship toothed pieces of work near by. I found one of the most effective parts of the work was the surface and the way it created a sense of intrigue as people questioned what it was. The space allowed people to get very close to the work to inspect it which was something i had hoped for. I thought the sound element also worked well although at time it was quite hard to hear it with such a crowded, noisy room. During the opening night I turned up the volume to counteract this difficulty. I thought overall my piece worked very well in the exhibition.
