Level 5 [Action Plan]

Experiment more with audio

Over the last few months I have really enjoyed using audio in my work and I can imagine lots of ways I can take it. Next year I want to make my studio space a more suitable space for recording sound. I am hoping to find a range of different portable analogue recording devises which I can use to make work in a range of ways, for example using a contact microphone to record direct onto cassettes. I want to see how I can use both analogue and digital audio recording within my work.

I'm also keen to look further into how sound art fits into art history and the relationship between music and the visual arts. I am keen to speak to members of staff outside of Fine Art such as Tom from Pop Music and the sound technicians to see howI can explore sound/music further.

Look at scale

Within my visual art I am very keen to explore how I can translate my current work into new scales. So far I have been working to a fairly small scale on standard sized white paper in most of my work. I would like to work at a much larger scale and experiment with different base materials to see how this affects the aesthetic and conceptual aspects of my drawings.

Continue to keep an artist diary

I've recently found it useful to keep a rough notebook of ideas, reflections and sketches while in the studio. This has been useful in terms of visualising my ideas and keeping them for a time when I am able to put them into practice. It has also helped me to map out my ideas/concepts so I have a better idea what my work is all about and how I react to my work. This is something I am very keen to continue to do and expand upon. While the book is not always something I feel the need to do, I have found it very useful at times would find it very useful to make use of this way of working again next year.

Look into putting on exhibitions/curation

This year my focus has been largely on my own work in the studio and setting myself up to be successful for the rest of the course and this will definitely remain very important in the way I work next year. However, I would like to begin to look further outside of the studio to explore more of the gallery spaces in Leeds. I would like to get far more involved in the Leeds art scene, going to more exhibition openings and art events. I would also like to explore the possibility of getting involved in more shows with my own work. After the exhibition, for which I was part of the curation team, I am keen to explore curation and so I would be very interested in exploring how I can be more involved in this weather it's for the Level 5 exhibition or elsewhere.
