Tony Cragg: A Rare Category of Objects - Yorkshire Sculpture Park

A Rare Category of Objects is a major exhibition of works by British sculptor Tony Cragg. The exhibition runs from March 4 to September 3 and makes use of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park's main gallery spaces and gardens.

The curator had clearly aimed to show the links between Cragg's drawings and his sculptures. In each of the hanger like indoor rooms drawings hung near to correlating sculptures allowing the viewer to see the evolution of the work from paper to wood or metal.

As is common at most exhibitions at the sculpture park, there was one large piece placed in front of picturesque hills which greets visitors as they drive up to the entrance. This is an effective way of introducing the park's main exhibition and giving the audience a taster of what is to come in the exhibition. From a curatorial/marketing  point of view this also allows for fantastic photos which can be used for press and publicity.

The use of outdoor spaces works well for exhibiting the larger pieces of work as they are not confined or crapped by a small room. This also created some very interesting visual relationships between the landscape and the work. Shimmering towers contrast in finish to the trees around them but share long twisted bodies with the trunks and branches. The curator effectively created a dialect between the man made sculptures and the nature around them.
