Disobedient Bodies - The Hepworth Wakefield

Curated by fashion designer Jonathan Anderson, Disobedient Bodies ran from March 18 to June 18nat the Hepworth Wakefield. The exhibition, put together by an individual largely based outside of the fine art world explores the relationship between art and fashion through a ranger of different works spanning many media. This was the first in a series of exhibitions in which the Hepworth are working with collaborators from outside of the visual arts. It was interesting to compare this show to others I have seen which are put together by conventional curators.

One of the largest differences in curation to many other exhibitions that I noticed was that none of the pieces of works had plaques stating the artist, title and other information. Instead these where replaced by numbers which correlated to a magazine styles accompaniment in which all of this information and a brief explanation of the work could be found. I thought this was a very effective way of making the exhibition walls more minimal so the viewer was able to focus solely on the work. It was also good to be able to take these magazines away for future reference.

The exhibition featured a range of artist from across disciplines including Jean Paul Gaultier, Louise Bourgeois, Henry Moore and Alberto Giacometti. In a very busy exhibition the large rooms where broken up by the curator using white curtains. This allowed viewers to view the work in smaller groups and broke up what could have been quite a chaotic space. The range of media used by the sometimes vastly different artists features worked better thanks to this breaking up of the space as complementary pieces could be selected to feature next to each other.
