OUFA404 - Materials and Processes

Materials and processes acted as an introduction to the workshops around college and an incentive to explore new ways of working. The project included a range of structured inductions in workshops around the college which demonstrated the kinds of things that can be achieved when using them while also giving us an understanding of health and safety procedures. I took note of my experimentations throughout these inductions and my general studio practice in a notebook which was submitted at the end of last term.

At the beginning of the term my practice was very much processes lead as I explored some new ways of making images. As time went on the experimentations with process took a slight back seat as I began to explore more concrete themes within my work. However, I did work hard to test out the techniques I explored in detail to really get a feel for them before moving on. When painting and printing I would make 10 to 20 pictures to explore how I could use each medium.

The majority of my experimentation during this project used 2D materials and processes to explore composition and space in drawings, paintings and prints. The material I explored in the most depth over the project was various types of tape. I began by using curved tape to create abstract images. I continued my explorations using electrical tape and duct tape to create similar, yet more linear pictures. I combined my use of tape with the paintings I had been making to explore space. While doing this I was able to use colour in a brand new way, combining the found colours of the various tapes and the mixed colours of the house paints I had been using.

While experimenting with this strand of my practice I had also been working onto pages of a free music magazine. My aim with this was to explore the composition of the pages and their relationships to each other. Mono printing was the original technique I had been using to pursue this area of my practice, however I later decided to combine it with my experimentations with tape. This was very effective and brought about a whole new meaning to the pieces. The rough aesthetic of materials like duct tape and the effect achieved by using sandpaper to remove areas of print suggested a kind of forced silence. I continued to use these materials and a range of other 2D materials to explore the idea of silencing voices on the pages of the magazines.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

During the projects I explored a range of processes that I was not familiar with to push myself to take my practice to new areas. I found this was very successful as it lead me to a whole new conceptual area of my work looking at magazine pages and the removal of information. My in depth exploration of processes like mono printing, using tape and watercolours was an effective way to introduce myself to new techniques and gave me a good idea of how they can be used. My exploration of 3D processes was not very thorough and is something that I feel I need to explore more in the future. When in the plater workshop I saw lots of processes such as paper making and casting which I am keen to try out. I would have liked to explore these processes further in the first term.
